What happens

Test pilot Jim Lane sets out from Burbank on a coast-to-coast record attempt, but his plane's oil pump fails over Kansas and he is forced down on the farm of Anne Barton. Lane and Anne spend the day together, and while Anne is engaged to a local man named Joe, Lane's flight becomes a turning point for both of them. The episode is an adaptation of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film Test Pilot, presented on the Lux Radio Theatre under the direction of Cecil B. DeMille, and it stars Robert Taylor, Rita Hayworth and Robert Preston. The broadcast of May 25, 1942 follows Lane's changing relationships with Anne and his mechanic Gunner Morris as the story moves toward a high-stakes race.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
