What happens

Dr. John Abbott, a country doctor in the small town of Westport, goes about his work treating patients who often cannot pay him. The Lux Radio Theatre presents this adaptation of the film A Man to Remember, with Bob Burns as Dr. Abbott and Anita Louise as Jean. The doctor adopts an abandoned baby girl, whom he raises as Jean, and he keeps a strongbox of unpaid bills and personal notes. Townspeople gather for his funeral, while the town's leading businessmen, George Sykes, Homer Ramsey and Joe Hartness, hope to recover their money from his estate. Their attorney, Clyde Perkins, goes through the papers, which recall the doctor's past dealings with the town.

Westport, a small town, in the years between the 1920s and the 1930s, with the funeral of Dr. Abbott taking place on a spring afternoon.

Characters: Dr. John Abbott, Jean, George Sykes, Homer Ramsey, Joe Hartness, Clyde Perkins, Dick Abbott, Howard Sykes

Listen for: The lawyer reading aloud the unpaid bills and notes in the doctor's strongbox, and the businessmen's reactions to each one.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
