What happens

Midge Loring, a young singer from a crowded East Side family, is discovered at the spaghetti house of her music teacher, Senior Antonio, and taken to radio executive Mr. Harrington. Her ambitious sponsor-minded admirers, including Bob Kalie, press her family to accept a radio contract, but her grandfather, the household's stern head, refuses to let her go. The first act of this Lux Radio Theatre production, from 1940-12-30, starring Gloria Jean, C. Aubrey Smith, Helen Parrish and Frank Albertson, sets up the family's divided opinions and the pressures on Midge as the offer draws closer.

New York's East Side, in a spaghetti house and the Loring family's apartment, with a radio studio and nightclubs in the city.

Characters: Midge Loring, Grandpa, Janet Loring, Bob Kalie, Senior Antonio, Mr. Harrington, Mrs. Loring, Mr. Loring

Listen for: Grandpa's refusal to let Midge sing on the radio, and the family arguments over the contract's payment terms.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
