What happens

Lum and Abner is a small-town comedy set in Pine Ridge, where the widow Boomba has arrived from Nashville with her seven children to marry Lum. Lum has grown uneasy about the large family and has been trying to get them out of town, while Abner and Grandpappy Spears urge him toward the wedding. The townsfolk gather at the store, trading gossip about Lum's courtship and his soft spot for children. Lum's plans for the match are hard to pin down, and his neighbors have plenty to say about it. The episode is an installment of the long-running NBC, Mutual, CBS and ABC series, first aired on January 31, 1940, with Chester Lauck, Norris Goff and Lurene Tuttle in the leading roles.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
