What happens
Lum Edwards and Abner Peabody have quarreled again, and Lum storms out of their shared store carrying books from his half of the library. One of those books hides a paper signed the previous week that gives Abner ownership of the store and bakery. Grandpappy Spears visits the store, and Abner tries to keep the secret from Lum. Squire Skaggs, who is Abner's rival, learns of the paper and persuades Lum that it is rightfully his to destroy. Skaggs then reveals to Abner that Lum plans to return to the store at midnight. Abner prepares a trap, calling for town marshal Henry Lunsford to wait with him. The series Lum and Abner aired on NBC, Mutual, CBS and ABC, and the episode first aired on January 20, 1942, with Chester Lauck, Norris Goff and Lurene Tuttle in the lead roles.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
