What happens
Lum and Abner have been under investigation for running a post office without government authorization, so they have given up the service and Van Packerspiers is again the only postmaster in Pine Ridge. At the Jot 'Em Down store, Lum and Abner talk over the trouble and what it has cost them. Lum, who has an eye on the postmaster job, announces that he will pull some strings to get it, which leads to a muddled argument over what political strings and pulling them actually mean. Abner takes the idea literally and is wary of being tied up in other people's business. The talk turns to counting stock and the price of canned peaches, and the two keep circling the question of the postmaster post.
The Jot 'Em Down store in Pine Ridge, a small hill-country community.
Characters: Lum, Abner, Van Packerspiers
Listen for: Lum's plan to pull some strings to become postmaster, and Abner's confused reading of what political strings mean.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
