What happens
Abner plans a surprise for Lum at the Jot-Em-Down store in Pine Ridge. Squire Skimp has bought a lion from a stranded carnival, and Abner intends to give it to Lum as a gift for the newly opened library, hoping it will help Lum win over Miss Frederick. Cedric delivers the crated animal to the back feed room while Abner keeps Lum busy at the library desk, checking the outgoing books and chatting with customers. Lum is sent to the back room with his eyes closed, expecting a gift, but the lion has got loose in that room. Lum's reaction is the first clear sign that something has gone wrong, and the story is set in the small community of Pine Ridge in the Lum and Abner series, first heard on NBC, Mutual, CBS and ABC in 1941 with Chester Lauck, Norris Goff and Lurene Tuttle in the leading roles.

Listen for: Lum being sent into the back feed room with his eyes closed, and what he finds there
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
