What happens
Lum Edwards tells the town of Pine Ridge that he has a broken leg to get out of escorting Sister Simpson to a social, and the lie spreads quickly. Abner Peabody, who started the story, is alarmed as friends crowd the house to wait on Lum and new schoolteacher Miss Fredericks hears of the injury. The two men search for a way out of the mess. Lum's friend Squire Skimp, who sells insurance, arrives and speaks of an accident policy. The series Lum and Abner aired on NBC, Mutual, CBS and ABC, with an original air date of October 13, 1941. Chester Lauck, Norris Goff and Lurene Tuttle lead the cast.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
