What happens
Lum and Abner, the proprietors of the Jot-Em-Down Store in Pine Ridge, are caught up in a contest to find the most honest, kind and generous person in town, and each resident suspects the others of being one of five secret deputies chosen to help Dodge Mayhew select the winner. Lum and Abner clear out their feed room for a printing shop being moved in by Dodge, and they become eager to show their own honesty. Cedric, whom they believe is a deputy because of a phone call from Dodge, helps himself to candy and then gives away goods from the store, prompting Lum and Abner to confront him.
Pine Ridge, a small community whose general store, the Jot-Em-Down Store, is run by Lum and Abner.
