What happens
Luigi Vasco, a newly arrived Italian immigrant in Chicago, writes to his mother in Italy about American sports and his growing enthusiasm for football. His night-school teacher, Miss Baldwin, offers him two tickets to a Michigan football game, but her niece Martha was meant to go with him, and Luigi is nervous about the date. His friend Pasquale coaches him on the rules of the game, the right way to yell at a game, and how to dress for it, while Rosa, the woman his family has pressed on him, keeps hoping he will settle down. The episode follows Luigi and Martha through their first afternoon together at the stadium, and the letter to his mother records how the day unfolds.
Chicago, Illinois, in the late 1940s: a night school classroom, a city neighborhood, and a Michigan football game at the stadium.
Characters: Luigi Vasco, Mama Vasco, Miss Baldwin, Martha, Pasquale, Rosa, Mr. Horowitz, Mr. Olsen
Listen for: Luigi's letters to his mother, Pasquale's football lessons, and the sounds of the stadium crowd during the game.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
