What happens
Luigi Basso, a cheerful Italian immigrant, is thrown out of the antique shop he works in by his friend Pasquale after a quarrel over money. Luigi decides to earn his fare home to see his mother in Italy by selling vacuum cleaners. Schultz, his friend, helps him find the job, but Luigi lacks a Social Security card, and his first demonstration goes badly. Luigi's high school teacher, Miss Spaulding, stops by and offers encouragement. The story is set in a city neighborhood, and the comedy centres on Luigi's broken English and his mishaps as a new salesman.
A city neighborhood in the United States, including Luigi's home, the antique shop, and a customer's house.
Characters: Luigi Basso, Pasquale, Schultz, Miss Spaulding, Mr. Graham, Mrs. McCrary
Listen for: Luigi's first vacuum cleaner demonstration, where his clumsy attempts lead to the loss of his job.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
