What happens
Chester A. Riley celebrates his eighteenth wedding anniversary with his wife Peg and their children, Babs and Junior, who give him a retouched wedding photograph in a silver frame. Riley is hurt when the picture makes him look like a comic figure. Later he wins a wire recorder on a quiz show and secretly hides it in the living room to record what his family says about him when he is away. The Life of Riley is a 1949 radio comedy series, and this episode aired on March 11, 1949, starring William Bendix as Riley and Paula Winslowe as Peg.
The Riley home in Brooklyn, on the couple's eighteenth wedding anniversary, and the house next door.
Characters: Chester A. Riley, Peg Riley, Babs, Junior, Gillis, Digger O'Dell
Listen for: Riley's reaction to the wedding photograph and the wire recorder's playback of his family's private remarks.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
