What happens

Chester Riley and his wife host their neighbor Jim Gillis for dinner, where talk turns to their daughter Babs, who is learning hostessing in her high school home economics class. Babs must host a formal dinner for her classmate Helene Bidwell and her teacher, Professor Cartwright, and the Rileys decide to outdo the wealthy Bidwell family. Riley, played by William Bendix, makes an awkward first impression on Helene and her family, and he sets out to furnish the dining room with a borrowed table, books and a few flourishes. The episode is part of the Blue Network and ABC run of The Life of Riley, first broadcast on May 3, 1947.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
