What happens
Chester A. Riley, a riveter at a California war plant, is named to a workers' welfare committee and assigned to look into Al Jenkins, a welder whose work has become a bottleneck. Riley quickly bonds with Jenkins over their shared Brooklyn background. Jenkins confides that his wife is unwell and that he is expecting a baby, and Riley encourages him, drawing on his own memories of becoming a father. Riley then tries to win a raise from his boss, Mr. Grimes, by telling him about the coming baby. The program is part of The Life of Riley, first broadcast on March 4, 1945, with William Bendix in the lead.
A California war plant and the Riley family's bungalow in Los Angeles, during World War II.
Characters: Chester A. Riley, Al Jenkins, Mrs. Riley, Mr. Grimes, Digger O'Dell, Dr. B.
Listen for: Riley's account of the night his daughter was born, told to Al Jenkins.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
