What happens

George Valentine receives a letter from Jasper, butler to wealthy brothers Mervin and Bill McIntosh, warning that someone intends to kill Mervin. When George arrives at their house, he finds Bill injured in a car accident and confessing that he deliberately drove off the road. Bill reveals that Fillerie, recently released from prison after losing his business when Mervin came to town, has threatened revenge and lured Mervin to a meeting that night—and Mervin has not been seen since.
