What happens
George Valentine arrives in the quirky town of Benson Flats after receiving an urgent letter from Miss Emily Wintrich, a librarian who fears her fiancé Saddlebags (the town judge) will be murdered. She has discovered that Saddlebags's estranged brother Henry, who has recently appeared in town after years of isolation in the hills, has been checking out every book in the library about poison. Miss Wintrich believes Henry, who stands to inherit everything, plans to poison his healthier brother.
Benson Flats, a small Gold Rush-era mining town in the hills, particularly the library and local jail that has been converted from an old building.
Characters: George Valentine, Miss Emily Wintrich, Saddlebags (the judge), Henry Benson, Brooks, Pete, Dusty
Listen for: The absurd town ordinance requiring all men to wear beards or pay a fine; Henry Benson's suspicious interest in chemistry and poison books; Miss Wintrich's mounting fears about her fiancé's safety.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
