What happens

A cook named Veroni is found murdered, shot by a hired killer who is himself discovered dead with a note revealing he was paid three thousand dollars to commit the crime. Detective George Valentine must unravel the mystery of who hired the killer, knowing that the only person who could identify the culprit—the cook—is now dead, and the killer cannot speak.

A pier and various locations in the city; the investigation involves an expedition that took place in South America.

Characters: George Valentine, Johnson, Captain Apperson, Frank Boyle, Veroni, Three Grand

Listen for: George Valentine's deduction that this is a crime with all the clues removed—the killer is dead, the only witness is dead, and the person who hired the killer remains hidden and protected by his own careful planning.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
