What happens

Joan Davis and Jack Haley ask Edward Everett Horton, a supposed mathematical genius, to check Joan's income tax return, which shows the government owing her a small refund. Horton's calculations turn the figures upside down, and Joan finds herself owing much more. To raise the money, Joan and Jack plan to sell an old helmet to her neighbor Blimpy as a colonial soup bowl, while the story also follows Penny Cartwright and assorted neighbors through the village store's comic misadventures.

The village store, where Joan Davis and Jack Haley run their business, and the surrounding village.

Characters: Joan Davis, Jack Haley, Edward Everett Horton, Blimpy, Penny Cartwright, Dave Street

Listen for: Horton's rapid, confusing tax explanations and the scheme to pass off the helmet as an antique soup bowl.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
