What happens
Cadet Jerry Dugan, newly arrived at Fair Oaks military academy after years with a circus, is shown around the campus by his roommate Lee. They try on his new dress uniform, learn about demerits and the cement benches honoring each graduating class, and meet Tubby Young and Captain Gardner. At the gym, the upperclassman Red Morrison picks on the young cadet Harold Linwell with a bogus errand, then forces Jerry to apologize after Jerry speaks up for Harold. Jerry comes away deeply disliking Red.
