What happens
Jack Benny and his cast perform on the Jell-O program, which airs on NBC and CBS Radio in May 1939 with Mary Livingstone, Phil Harris, Kenny Baker and Eddie Anderson. The show opens with banter among the cast about Jell-O, sulfur and molasses, and Phil Harris's band. Jack gives Kenny a hard time over a girl's phone number, and Andy Divine drops by the studio. The cast then performs a comic play called Weather Clear, Track Fast, in which the performers act as racehorses, and the story follows the entries of the Kentucky Derby as the race begins.
A radio studio during a live Jell-O broadcast, and then the paddock and racetrack at Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby.
Characters: Jack Benny, Mary Livingstone, Phil Harris, Kenny Baker, Don Wilson, Andy Divine, Eddie Anderson, Johnstown
Listen for: Phil Harris's complaints about his band's brass section, and the racing commentary as the horses run the Derby.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
