What happens
Jack Benny and his cast open their broadcast with comic talk about commuting to the studio without a car during wartime. Mary Livingstone, Phil Harris and Dennis Day join in as they gather, and a row breaks out when Phil's baby appears and a dispute arises over whose picture belongs on a cereal box. Benny then tries to fill the gap left by absent guest stars by staging a parody of the film Tales of Manhattan. This Jack Benny broadcast aired on October 25, 1942, on NBC and CBS Radio, with Benny, Livingstone, Eddie Anderson and Phil Harris in the lead roles.
A radio studio in Hollywood during wartime, where the cast rehearses and performs a live comedy program.
Characters: Jack Benny, Mary Livingstone, Phil Harris, Dennis Day, Rochester, Don Wilson, Kate Smith, Mr. Chapin
Listen for: Benny's running gags about getting to the studio without his car, and his parody of Tales of Manhattan with its many mock guest stars.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
