What happens
Jack Benny checks out of his New York hotel and rushes to catch the train to Los Angeles with Mary Livingstone, Rochester, Dennis Day, Phil Harris and Don Wilson. Benny is shocked by a $68 telephone charge to Birmingham, Alabama, and argues with the hotel clerk over his bill while the group hurries to the station. Once aboard the 20th Century Limited, the travelers settle into their berths and pass the time with small talk, jokes and bickering. Benny complains about Dennis Day's yawning and sleep, Phil Harris dreams of a simple life in the mountains, and Mary tries to keep the peace among the crowded compartments. The account stops partway through the journey, as the troupe is still on the train.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
