What happens

Jack Benny kids his radio friends about a racehorse he has bought, and Don Wilson, Phil Harris and Mary Livingstone tease him about his knowledge of horses. Benny plays a police captain in the program's annual mystery spoof, Murder in the Library, presented on the 1938 Jell-O show. Phil Harris and Kenny Baker play his assistants, and Mary Livingstone plays Mrs. Clunkenbush, a woman with a long string of husbands. The police are called to her home, where the butler Blimp has already been questioned. The episode is a comedy sketch built on the show's usual running gags.

A radio studio broadcast of the Jell-O program, moving into a comic mystery set at police headquarters and a house on Maple Street.

Characters: Jack Benny, Mary Livingstone, Don Wilson, Phil Harris, Kenny Baker, Eddie Anderson, Mrs. Clunkenbush, Blimp the butler

Listen for: The running jokes about Benny's racehorse and Mrs. Clunkenbush's husbands, and the sponsor plugs for Jell-O woven into the sketch.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
