What happens

Jack Benny and his valet Rochester take center stage as Jack's household staff and friends cross his path in a series of comic exchanges. Phil Harris shows off his new convertible, Dennis Day frets over a broken romance, and Mel Blanc pitches a jingle. The episode, from the Jack Benny series, first aired on February 25, 1951, on NBC and CBS Radio, with Jack Benny, Mary Livingstone, Eddie Anderson and Phil Harris in the cast. Jack's gag-filled domestic scenes give way to a mystery-flavored story-within-the-story about a wealthy man's will, which Rochester is reading aloud from a library book titled I Was Coerced.

Jack Benny's home and the surrounding neighborhood, with a short scene in a Beverly Hills-style library and a rehearsal-day drive through town.

Characters: Jack Benny, Rochester, Phil Harris, Dennis Day, Mel Blanc, Mr. O'Day, Mrs. O'Day, Marty Blackstone

Listen for: Rochester reading aloud from the library book I Was Coerced, and the comic payoff of Jack's runaway questions to Phil about the pink slip.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
