What happens
Jack Benny and his cast perform a Jell-O-sponsored episode of the Jack Benny radio program, broadcast on May 21, 1939, on NBC and CBS Radio. Benny talks with Don Wilson, Mary Livingstone, Phil Harris and Kenny Baker about trouble with the ending of his new Paramount film, in which Phil Harris's character wins the girl. Benny tries to change the script and makes a deal with the producer over Rochester's role. The cast then performs a parody of the RKO film Gunga Din, with Benny as Gunga Din and Kenny Baker as Private Baker, who are captured by Phil Harris as a bandit chief.
The Jack Benny radio program, with scenes at a film studio and a parody of Gunga Din set in India's desert and a bandit temple
Characters: Jack Benny, Don Wilson, Mary Livingstone, Phil Harris, Kenny Baker, Rochester, Mr. Hornblow, Dorothy Lamour
Listen for: Benny's dispute with Phil Harris over the film's ending and the Gunga Din parody, including Harris's bandit chief scenes
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
