What happens
Jack Benny hosts a comedy episode of his radio show in which he and his cast present a parody of the film The Road to Bali, with Bob Hope as a guest. The episode opens with the regulars trading jokes about the White House, taxes and a freezer full of meat. Jack's friends then tease him over a steak dinner, and Rochester calls with an odd story. Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, as the characters in the film parody, are stranded and broke in Australia and turn to pickpocketing. The Jack Benny Program aired on NBC and CBS Radio on January 11, 1953, starring Jack Benny with Mary Livingstone, Eddie Anderson and Phil Harris.
A radio studio during a live broadcast of The Jack Benny Program, with a comedy sketch set in Australia and the jungle.
Characters: Jack Benny, Mary Livingstone, Rochester, Don Wilson, Dennis Day, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Phil Harris
Listen for: Jack Benny's ad-libbed exchanges with his cast, the running jokes about Rochester's story and the octopus role, and the Road to Bali parody with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
