What happens
Jack Benny stages a comic sketch on his radio show, a parody of the film Edward, My Son, with Mary Livingstone, Dennis Day and Mel Blanc taking part. The story follows Sir Spencer Bold, a wealthy man whose life is built around his son Edward. Deborah, his wife, and the household staff help tell the tale as Edward grows from a baby into a young man. The sketch is performed in the Jack Benny program, with the regular cast of Phil Harris and Rochester joining in around it. The transcript breaks off during the sketch, so the outcome of the parody is not described here.
A radio studio, where the Jack Benny program's comedy sketch presents a parody of Edward, My Son in England.
Characters: Jack Benny, Mary Livingstone, Phil Harris, Rochester, Dennis Day, Mel Blanc, Don Wilson, Spencer Bold
Listen for: Dennis Day singing his song, and the sketch's running joke that Edward keeps growing up and never learns to say daddy.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
