What happens

Jack Benny, back from North Africa, is writing a new radio show with his writers while Mary Livingston and Phil Harris tease him about his newly military manner. A cab driver named Crowley comes looking for news of his brother, a corporal overseas, and Dennis Day sings at the microphone. Rochester telephones the studio, and an Associated Press reporter arrives to interview Benny. The program then turns into a parody of the film Casablanca, with Benny playing Rick, Phil Harris playing Sam at the piano, and a songbook of familiar tunes woven through the scene. This first half of the episode is part of the Jack Benny series and was broadcast on October 17, 1943.

Characters: Jack Benny, Mary Livingston, Phil Harris, Don Wilson, Dennis Day, Rochester, Eddie Anderson, Crowley

Listen for: Jack Benny's military bluster toward his writers, Crowley's repeated questions about his brother, and the Casablanca spoof with Phil Harris as Sam.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
