What happens

Britt Reid, publisher of the Daily Sentinel, and his photographer Jack Leland investigate a fatal fire at a clothing store that claimed the life of a fire chief. A photograph Jack took shows a white-helmeted figure leaping from a side window just before the walls collapsed. Reid and his secretary Lenora Case examine the image, questioning how a fire chief could be seen escaping when records place him inside the building. Their inquiries reveal conflicting accounts, and the figure in the photograph becomes the central puzzle of the case.

A city in the 1940s, including the Daily Sentinel newspaper offices, a burned clothing store, police headquarters, and a country cabin by the river.

Characters: Britt Reid, Mike Axford, Jack Leland, Gunny, Lenora Case, Reed, Kato, John Fairbury

Listen for: The enlarged photograph and the white figure in the window, and how the newspaper team tests the official explanation.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
