What happens

Michael Aloysius Axford, a reporter for the Daily Sentinel, intervenes when a landlord named Kramer evicts Mrs. O'Toole, whose soldier husband's allotment check is delayed. Axford takes her to the Red Cross and later brings toys to her children. That night he follows a man who was stealing checks from a mailbox, and he overhears a group of men in a shabby room on Water Street. Britt Reid, the publisher, and his valet Cato become worried when Axford fails to show up for dinner. The Green Hornet, who is Reid's secret identity, investigates the trail of toys and cab rides to Water Street.

A hot summer city in the 1940s, including a run-down apartment house, the Daily Sentinel offices, and a shabby building on Water Street

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
