What happens
Water Commissioner Gildersleeve is on the job when his nephew Leroy helps out at the water department during the secretary's vacation. Gildersleeve is caught with his feet on his desk and reading a love story magazine, and the mayor warns him that he must mend his ways. Soon the mayor fires him, and Gildersleeve is left stunned while his friends at the Jolly Boys gather to commiserate. The Great Gildersleeve is a long-running radio comedy, and this episode aired on NBC on August 5, 1953, with Harold Peary in the title role and Willard Waterman, Lillian Randolph and Lurene Tuttle in the cast.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
