What happens
Gildersleeve plans a picnic outing with Miss Kelly and friends from City Hall, but the outing is called off and he is left at loose ends. Meanwhile his nephew Leroy, bored with no playmates, is told by his uncle to find something to do on his own. Gildersleeve counsels self-sufficiency to Leroy and to his housekeeper Birdie and to Margie, each in turn, and boasts of his own independence. The Great Gildersleeve aired on NBC on August 26, 1953, and this installment is led by Harold Peary, with Willard Waterman, Lillian Randolph and Lurene Tuttle also appearing.
Summer Saturday in Summerfield, a small town; Gildersleeve's house, the town square and a nearby lot

Listen for: Gildersleeve lecturing others on being sufficient unto oneself, and his picnic being cancelled
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
