What happens
Leroy Gildersleeve wants a car like his friend Piggy's, and his uncle Gildersleeve refuses, insisting Leroy save his own money. Leroy comes home with a battered old car for five dollars, and the household is soon dealing with the results. Judge Hooker and Gildersleeve try to get rid of the wreck before dark, but the car refuses to stay dead. Leroy keeps working on it with his friend Piggy, and Gildersleeve, Birdie and Marjorie each weigh in on whether he should be allowed to drive. The Great Gildersleeve is a radio comedy from NBC, first broadcast on September 5, 1951, and starring Harold Peary, with Willard Waterman in the title role, Lillian Randolph and Lurene Tuttle.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
