What happens
Leila Ransom's new suitor, newspaperman Mark Wade, is invited to dinner by Gildersleeve's neighbor, and the evening's visit turns into a rivalry. Gildersleeve, who has long been fond of Leila, grows jealous and sulky as Mark charms the household. Tensions rise over jokes, a challenge to a fight, and a card game at the Jolly Boy club. Gildersleeve, meanwhile, is preparing to propose to Leila. The Great Gildersleeve is an NBC radio comedy starring Harold Peary, and this episode first aired on May 12, 1946.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
