What happens
Water commissioner Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve believes his secretary Bessie is distracted by a new boyfriend named Martin, and he tries to help her win him back. Their misunderstandings grow when a misdirected letter, a dress shopping trip, and gossip at the Jolly Boys Club make him appear to be romancing Bessie himself. The Great Gildersleeve is a long-running NBC comedy series, and this episode first aired on September 24, 1947, starring Harold Peary, with Willard Waterman, Lillian Randolph and Lurene Tuttle in the regular cast. Gildersleeve reacts with growing irritation as the rumors reach his friends and family.
Summerfield, a small town; Gildersleeve's office at the Water Department, his house on the street, and the Jolly Boys Clubhouse above Floyd Munson's barbershop
Characters: Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, Bessie, Martin, Birdie, Leroy, Floyd, Judge Hooker, Mr. Gorton
Listen for: Gildersleeve's loud protests about the misunderstanding with Bessie, and the Jolly Boys Club scene where the rumors about him are spread
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
