What happens
Gildersleeve, the water commissioner, finds his bank account shrinking and decides to take up writing as a way to earn extra money. Inspired by a magazine advertisement promising success after thirteen easy lessons, he begins drafting a story at home. Along the way he seeks advice from his friends Floyd and Peavey and from the judge, and he tries to learn the craft from the literary visitor Mr. Clement. The series is The Great Gildersleeve, first broadcast on NBC on January 5, 1949, with Harold Peary in the title role.
Summerfield, a small town in the winter, centered on the Gildersleeve house, the barbershop, the drugstore and the water department.
Characters: Gildersleeve, Leroy, Marjorie, Bertie, Judge Hooker, Floyd, Peavey, Eve Goodwin
Listen for: Gildersleeve's attempts to write a story, and his tea with Mr. Clement.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
