What happens
Throughout the episode, the Great Gildersleeve, the water commissioner of Summerfield, faces a New Year's dilemma: his engagement to Adeline Fairchild, a marriage made partly so they could adopt a baby girl he had been caring for. Now that the baby has returned to her father, Gildersleeve wonders whether he really wants to marry. Doubts build as he visits the Judge and Leroy, then attends a Jolly Boys send-off in his honor. He confides in Dr. Prescott, who presses him on whether he truly loves Adeline. The story is set against a New Year's Eve atmosphere in Summerfield. Harold Peary plays the title role in this NBC broadcast of December 29, 1948, part of The Great Gildersleeve series.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
