What happens
Gildersleeve, the pompous but well-meaning head of the Gildersleeve household in Summerfield, spends a quiet evening at home with his niece Marjorie and nephew Leroy. Reading a magazine advertisement, he becomes captivated by an annuity plan promising $160 a month at age sixty, and he mails in the coupon. Soon he begins to imagine a comfortable retirement, and talk of it spreads among his friends at the barbershop and the post office. The Great Gildersleeve is a long-running NBC radio comedy, and this episode aired on October 16, 1946, starring Harold Peary in the title role, with Lillian Randolph as Birdie and Lurene Tuttle in the cast. Gildersleeve's sudden enthusiasm for the plan sets the story in motion.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
