What happens
Water commissioner Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, a Summerfield civic leader, recalls his past in amateur theater, when his niece Marjorie drew him into a local little theatre production. He has been cast in the title role of Cyrano de Bergerac, though he has not yet read the play. Director Bruce Fairfield and Gildersleeve's friends and family react to his casting, and Gildersleeve begins to learn what the story is about. The Great Gildersleeve was a radio comedy, and this episode aired on NBC on June 2, 1946, starring Harold Peary.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
