What happens

Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, the mayor-hopeful, has announced his engagement to Miss Eve Goodwin, the school principal, and his friends at Peavey's drugstore offer their congratulations. Floyd, Peavey and Judge Hooker debate whether love is a habit, an accident or a miracle, while Gildersleeve insists his engagement is the real thing. At home, his niece Marjorie and his housekeeper Birdie discuss the match, and Gildersleeve's young ward Leroy, who resents the new arrival, is coached to be polite. The engaged couple attend an engagement party given by Leila Ransom, where the guests tease Gildersleeve. This episode of The Great Gildersleeve, broadcast on NBC on April 30, 1944, stars Harold Peary, Willard Waterman, Lillian Randolph and Lurene Tuttle.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
