What happens
Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve faces a scheduling conflict: he has promised to attend a tea dance with Ellen Knickerbocker, the Baltimore widow who has recently come to Summerfield, yet he has also been invited to the birthday party for the baby Marjorie's friend Romeo's little Romery... The baby's first-birthday party is set for the same afternoon at his house. Gildersleeve has to choose between the two events, and his family and neighbors are watching. This is an episode of The Great Gildersleeve, a radio comedy series that aired on NBC on April 6, 1949, starring Harold Peary.
Summerfield, a small town; Gildersleeve's house and the Summerfield Hotel palm room
Characters: Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, Ellen Knickerbocker, Bob, Romery, Marjorie, Leroy, Judge Hooker, Mr. Peavy
Listen for: Gildersleeve's decision between the tea dance and the baby's party, and his awkward exchanges with Ellen Knickerbocker
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
