What happens
Throck Morton P. Gildersleeve, the water commissioner in the town of Summerfield, is named acting police commissioner while the mayor is away on a fishing trip. The whistling bandit, a dangerous robber who announces himself by whistling a tune, has just hit the post office in Dexter and is now said to be active nearby. Gildersleeve takes his new role seriously, issuing a traffic ticket to Judge Hooker and directing traffic himself, and he soon finds his own water department's safe robbed. Harold Peary plays Gildersleeve in this episode of The Great Gildersleeve, which aired on NBC on March 30, 1949, with Willard Waterman, Lillian Randolph and Lurene Tuttle also in the cast.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
