What happens

Fred Allen strolls down Main Street with his sidekick Portland Hoffa, stopping to chat with a string of eccentric townsfolk about the day's news and whether anyone actually reads their newspapers. Their conversations wander from inventions and poetry contests to a flagpole quarrel, a flower show and a job-hunting acquaintance named Henry Morgan. Allen then makes Morgan a business proposition, prompting talk of a quiz show built around a mystery melody. The episode is from the Fred Allen radio series, first broadcast February 27, 1949, with Fred Allen, Portland Hoffa, Kenny Delmar and Minerva Pious in the cast.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
