What happens

Fibber McGee and Molly's washing machine breaks down in the basement, and Fibber decides to buy a replacement after reading a classified ad for a used electric washer. The ad gives only a telephone number, and the seller, Mrs. J. Benchley-Moss, is hard to track down. Fibber and Molly question a telephone operator, a neighbor who gets her mail at General Delivery, and a series of acquaintances, each offering a confusing or unhelpful lead. Molly's quarrel with the neighborhood gossip and the old-timer's rambling account of his absent sweetheart add to the delay. The episode is part of the NBC Radio series Fibber McGee and Molly, first broadcast on March 30, 1943, with Harold Peary and Bill Thompson in the lead roles.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
