What happens

Jim Anderson and his wife Margaret plan a dinner at their home on Maple Street so that Margaret's cousin Louise can finally receive a marriage proposal from her boyfriend Tom Goodwin. The evening is complicated by the Anderson children, who keep interrupting with noisy experiments and disruptions, and by Jim and Margaret's own bickering over their scheme. Father Knows Best is the series named here, first broadcast on January 25, 1951, with Robert Young starring. The episode follows the matchmaking attempt through the dinner and the evening's mishaps.

The Anderson home on Maple Street, Hollywood-era suburban America, during an evening dinner party.

Characters: Jim Anderson, Margaret Anderson, Louise Baker, Tom Goodwin, Bud Anderson, Kathy Anderson, Betty Anderson, Joe

Listen for: Jim and Margaret's arguments over whether Tom Goodwin is ready to propose, and the children's noisy phone experiment during dinner.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
