What happens

Alan Cooper arrives as the new assistant at a remote government station in Borneo, where Mr. Warburton is the resident. The two men clash from the start, Warburton being a snob who lost his fortune in England and Cooper resenting his air of superiority. Their disputes grow over newspapers, servants, and the handling of prisoners, and tension rises between them. Escape presents Somerset Maugham's story The Outstation, aired on July 12, 1953, with Ben Wright as narrator and Alistair Duncan as Warburton.

A remote government outstation in colonial Borneo, with a river landing, a bungalow compound, and a nearby native village.

Characters: Alan Cooper, Mr. Warburton, Abbas, Robertson

Listen for: The steady escalation of hostility between Cooper and Warburton over small matters, and the servants' growing unrest.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
