What happens
Four men from the sunken steamer Commodore, a captain, an oiler named Billy, a cook and a correspondent, are adrift in a small open dinghy off the Florida coast, fighting heavy waves and sharks as they row toward a lighthouse and land. They take turns at the oars, improvise a sail from the captain's overcoat, and watch hopefully for rescuers from a house of refuge. A man on the beach waves at them, but no boat comes out to help. Escape's adaptation of Stephen Crane's 1897 story The Open Boat was broadcast on July 19, 1953, starring William Conrad as narrator and Tom Tully as the correspondent.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
