What happens

During the German advance into France in 1940, an elderly English farmer named Sam Gates is working turnips on Mr. Dodge's farm in Halvisham when a German reconnaissance plane lands in his field. Its pilot, Hausmann, forces Sam aboard at gunpoint and flies him across the Channel behind German lines. There Sam is mistaken for the British-hunted spy Paul Jupyr, and he must convince both captors and his own countrymen of who he really is. The Escape series aired this episode on July 5, 1953.

Halvisham, England, and then German-occupied France during the German advance of 1940

Characters: Sam Gates, Aggie, Captain Hausmann, Paul Jupyr, General Cartwright, Wing Commander Jennings, Mr. Dodge

Listen for: Sam Gates's dialect-filled exchanges with his niece Aggie and with the German and British officers who question him

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
