What happens
On a bus bound for Hollywood, an aspiring actor named Evan finds a large roll of money in his top coat, left behind by a heavyset passenger taken into custody. Instead of turning it in, Evan goes to Juarez, a border town, and tries to sell the bills through a series of shady contacts. Each step draws him deeper into a dangerous underworld of dealers, bartenders, and hired thugs. Evan is pursued and drugged, and he finds himself caught in a situation far from the glamour he had imagined. The episode features Jack Webb as Evan, Bill Conrad as Jake, and Vic Perrin as O'Toole. It was broadcast in December 1949 as part of the Escape series.
A bus route from Dallas to El Paso, and the border town of Juarez, Mexico, including a cheap hotel, a bar called El Serape, and a road gang camp in the desert.
Characters: Evan, Chuck Rice, Miguel, Nieves, O'Toole, Jake, Gonzalez, Miller
Listen for: Evan's growing realization that the money he found may be genuine, and the tense exchanges with O'Toole and Jake.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
