What happens
Narrated by the lighthouse keeper John, the story is set on a bare rock lighthouse off the steaming jungle coast of French Guiana. Three men tend the light: John, the silent and dominant Louis, and August, a talkative former actor. One dawn a derelict three-master drifts toward the rocks, swarming with rats. The men are driven into the lighthouse's upper rooms as the creatures gnaw through the floors and walls. Escape, the CBS radio anthology of adventure stories, presents this episode, first broadcast on November 15, 1949, with William Conrad as Louis and Eliot Reed as John.
A lighthouse on a bare rock off the jungle coast of French Guiana
Characters: John, Louis, August
Listen for: The growing menace of the rats as they climb the lighthouse and gnaw through its floors
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
